Scheduling

The ideal time for a Newborn Portrait Session is when the baby is between 5 and 14 days old. Babies are very sleepy at this time, have little sensitivity to touch and sound, and are very comfortable in those adorable curled-up infant photography poses we all adore so much.

Because the window to have a newborn photography session is so little, I recommend booking your baby's portrait session ahead of time while you are still pregnant.

Of course I understand that babies often don't come when they are expected, for that reason all my newborn portrait appointments are on tentative basis. I keep in touch with you for the latest updates. Once your baby arrives we can move the photography appointment if necessary.

Prepare your bag

I have all different props, baskets and backdrops in the studio but of course you all welcome to bring some outfits you would like to be incorporated into the photo shoot. To personalize your session, I will send you an email to find out what your preferences in style are. We recommend you come to us with the bare necessities like diapers, formula, dummies ect.

Prepare Your Baby

A well fed baby is a happy sleepy baby! I recommend feeding right before you leave your home. Plan on an extra feedings (sometimes 2 or more). The sessions tend to make babies hungry and you will need to feed them to put them back to sleep. I suggest trying to keeping them awake before the session, including the car ride over. Don’t worry about baby acne or little scratches. During the retouching  I will either eliminate or minimize these imperfections. If your baby has extremely dry skin, try putting baby lotion on prior to coming to your session and bring extra with you. This will assist with the retouching process.  Please make sure they aren’t wearing tight socks because they will leave sock lines at their ankles. My sessions are usually done with the diaper on (don't worry it will not on visible on the photos) unless you request the nappy off.

Prepare Your Family

For any family members being photographed, we recommend dark pants and black or white shirts. For younger siblings, they can wear a light coloured clothes. For mothers who really want to shine, we recommend professional hair and makeup (you won’t regret it). It will be warm in the studio to keep the newborn comfortable.  Moms, don’t worry about the baby weight you haven’t lost, or any skin issues you may still have. We can retouch all that away if you wish! Mom’s and Dad’s hands will be shown in many of the close up photographs. These are just recommendation, please drop me an email if you have any questions at all.

Timing

Plan on being at the studio for around 2- 2,5 hours. The younger the baby, the less likely it is we will need all 2 hours, but we still recommend it to avoid any stress. We like to leave plenty of time for extra feedings, diaper changes and the fussiest of moods. Sessions very often consist of feeding the baby, settling the baby and then few minutes of actual photo shooting. We will use a bean bag and then 3-4 arranged sets to give you a variety of images.

One Last Thing …  ENJOY! 

No matter what your baby does, please know that I am always relaxed. This session is supposed to be a special experience for you and I don’t want you stressed if the baby starts to cry.  We have plenty of time allowed for your session. If we need to take a break to feed, walk, rock, etc., we can do that. I want you to enjoy the experience of your session and this special bonding moment for your family.
